What is Adopt-a-Spot?
Is there a spot in your neighborhood that could use some extra attention? Adopt-a-Spot is a program that gives Covington residents, businesses, and community groups the tools and support they need to clean up and beautify a spot of their choosing. Participants determine the work that needs to be done themselves and work at their own pace.
How does it work?

Choose your spot.
Any Covington resident, group, or business may participate! Adopted spots must be on public property or in the public right-of-way, and can include traffic islands, sidewalks, trails, parks, vacant lots, streets, or blocks. Many residents choose their immediate area, and many businesses choose their storefronts - but it is completely up to you!

Maintain your spot.
Once you register your spot, you'll maintain it in a way and at a pace that works for you - by picking up litter, pulling weeds, planting greenery, or whatever you see fit. Participants will be asked to report on their work once a month, and this reporting helps us better understand the needs of each neighborhood, and gives you a chance to share photos to be featured on our social media!

Get the tools you need.
To support your efforts, you'll receive a kit with everything you need: a five-gallon bucket, a litter grabber, an Adopt-a-Spot tote bag, a KCB shirt, a window cling, a high-visibility vest, trash bags, and your choice of hand tools. You'll also be eligible to apply for mini-grants, should any expenses arise.
Adopt-a-Spot programs offer a wide range of benefits that go far beyond simple cleanup, providing significant advantages to the environment, local government, and the community as a whole. Participants - even those who do not live near water - protects our waterways, since 30% of urban litter eventually flow into them. And, it prevents illegal dumping, as a clean, well-maintained area is less likely to be a target. This preventative maintenance saves significant resources that would otherwise be used for costly hazardous waste removal. There are social benefits as well; many of our participants notice their efforts are contagious, inspiring neighbors to follow suit. A lower litter presence directly contributes to a more welcoming, safer environment for residents and visitors alike. The Adopt-a-Spot program can also be a fantastic opportunity for youth education and can used to fulfill community service requirements for students. The reports that participants submit provide our organization with valuable information on litter hotspots, helping us monitor litter, organize clean-ups, and efficiently allocate resources.
